John Hughes remains beloved for his teen comedies of the 1980s, of which Sixteen Candles is a popular, but controversial, favorite. Making stars of Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall, Sixteen Candles explores the mortifications of life for a teenage girl surrounded by too much family in the house and difficult classmates. The film’s sexual situations, casual drug use, and nudity challenged just what a PG movie was, helping force the MPA to create the PG-13 rating.
