Timothy Treadwell spent 13 years living amongst grizzly bears at Katmai National Park in Alaska. For several of these years, he videotaped the bears and his encounters with them. In 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend were killed by a bear, leaving his unfinished documentary behind. Celebrated filmmaker Werner Herzog (Aguirre, the Wrath of God; Fitzcarraldo) was asked to direct a film built upon Treadwell’s footage, and the connection of filmmaker to subject helped create one of the most celebrated documentaries of the 21st Century. Herzog presents a complex yet sympathetic exploration of Treadwell’s life, work as a conservationist, and skill as a filmmaker. Featuring gorgeous imagery and a powerful score from Richard Thompson, Grizzly Man remains a challenging and powerful documentary well-worth discussing with an audience!
