Why We have PG13 Rating: Gremlins (40th Anniversary)

A Christmas movie with a silly, yet violent, streak, Gremlins was marketed as a film for the entire family but was clearly too much for the youngest members of the audience.  From Phoebe Cates’ story of her worst Christmas to the violent kitchen fight to the nightmare-fuel of a melting Stripe, the film was a delight for older audiences and critics, but too much for the children who found Gizmo adorable but his offspring less-so.  Directed with zeal by Joe Dante and full of great practical effects, Gremlins is a Christmas movie for those who want their hearts warmed in a different way.
